The AI quiz host

What is an AI quiz host?

An AI quiz host reads each question out loud, listens to the answers and keeps score, so nobody has to play quizmaster. What it does, and where it fails.

Friday night, six people at the table, a stack of cards with questions on them. One person will never get to answer any of them: the one reading them out.

An AI quiz host takes that job. An AI quiz host is software that runs a quiz out loud: it reads each question, listens to the spoken answer, decides whether it counts, keeps the score and hands the turn to the next player. It is also called an AI trivia host or an AI quizmaster. Nobody holds the cards, and nobody keeps score on a napkin. The person who would have hosted gets to play.

What does an AI quiz host do?

A person hosting a quiz does four jobs at once. They read the question so everyone hears it. They listen, and rule on whether "Lyons" counts for Lyon. They keep the score and say it often enough that nobody argues. And they keep the room moving, with a line for the near miss and a nudge for the quiet one.

An AI quiz host does the same four jobs with a voice and a microphone. The question is spoken, the answer is spoken, and the score is announced instead of written down. It also has to know whose turn it is without being told. In practice that means a fixed order: the first player answers the first question, the second player the second.

How is a quiz host different from a quiz creator?

They solve different problems. A quiz creator writes questions. You give it a topic, it produces a quiz, and then somebody still has to read it out, run it and score it, usually on a screen everyone taps. An AI voice for a game show is not a host either: a text-to-speech voice reads the lines it is given, but it does not listen to anyone or keep a score.

A quiz host runs the game. The questions might come from a checked pack or from a writer, but the point is what happens at the table: the reading, the listening, the ruling, the score. If you have ever been the one in the passenger seat reading questions to the back seat from a phone, you know which of the two jobs is the tiring one.

What makes a good AI quiz host?

The voice matters less than you would think. The turn matters more.

  • It waits until the question is finished before it listens, so nobody is cut off halfway through.
  • You can say "say that again" to hear the question, or "pass" to skip it.
  • When it cannot make out an answer, it asks once instead of guessing.
  • It never makes up the score. The questions, the answers and the rulings are fixed; only the commentary changes from game to game.
  • It has a personality you would invite back, which is a matter of taste.

The fourth point is the one to check. A host that writes its own jokes is fun. A host that writes its own facts, or announces the wrong score, ends the game.

Where does it work, and where doesn't it?

A spoken quiz needs a place where people can talk. A kitchen table on a Friday. The back seat at hour two, with the front seat listening in. A charging stop with twenty minutes to fill.

It does not suit a quiet train or a sleeping toddler, because everyone answers out loud. It does not suit a stretch of road with no signal either, because the host needs an internet connection to hear you. Wind noise is the other limit. With the windows down on the highway, the microphone will lose to the road.

An example: Quizy

Quizy is the one I make. It is an AI quiz host for iPhone. It reads each question out loud, listens for the answer and keeps score by name. The Host is quick and mildly amused, and the Narrator, who comes with Premium or the Wild Bundle, finds you, too, quite remarkable.

The questions come from checked packs. In Improv, which comes with Premium, the host writes its own reactions to the answer you actually gave, but never the score. It needs an iPhone and a signal, and no account. It is Download on the App Store.

Questions people ask

Can an AI host a quiz night? Yes. An AI quiz host reads the questions out loud, listens to the answers and keeps the score. It needs a room where people can talk and an internet connection.

Does an AI quiz host write the questions? It does not have to, and the better ones do not. In the app I make, the questions come from checked packs, and the model writes only the host's reactions.

Is an AI quiz host the same as an AI quiz generator? No. A generator makes a quiz for you to read. A host runs the game out loud: the reading, the listening and the score.

Try one tonight

Pick a moment when everyone is already together: dinner, the next stop, the last hour of the drive. Let the host read the first question, and see who answers before you do.
