Choosing a quiz category is a way to give those people their moment. You do not need to know everything. Start with something you enjoy knowing about, then share the choice.

Recognising a song and remembering a fact about music are different pleasures. If music is already part of your conversations, it is a natural place to start a quiz. The point is not to defend your taste. It is to see which bits of knowledge stayed with you.

Make the choice part of the evening
Ask each player for one subject they would enjoy. Start with a shared favourite, then rotate the choice for later rounds. If two people have very different interests, agree in advance that both will get a turn rather than arguing over the first selection.
